Matthieu Dhenne
Matthieu Dhenne has been a member of the Paris Bar since 2014. He founded Dhenne Avocats in 2018 and represents his clients before the Unified Patent Court.
His practice is litigation. He argues infringement and revocation actions before the Paris Judicial Court and the Paris Court of Appeal, runs saisie-contrefaçon operations and applications to set the order aside, argues applications for provisional measures in claim and in defence, and appears before the Unified Patent Court and in opposition proceedings at the European Patent Office. He coordinates the parallel proceedings opened abroad.
His cases concern FRAND licences and standard essential patents, information technology and computer-implemented inventions, chemistry and life sciences, electronic and medical devices, mechanics, as well as trade secrets and employee inventions.
His academic work, his teaching and his publications serve that practice: on patentability, on FRAND and on procedure, they give him a reasoned position which he then defends at the hearing.
Education
Matthieu holds a doctorate in patent law (Université Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas), a Master II in Industrial Property Law (CEIPI, Strasbourg) and an LL.M. in International Legal Practice from Bond University (Queensland, Australia). During his academic career he was a visiting researcher at Columbia University (New York) and a scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich (Max Planck Society and GRUR scholarships). In 2026 he spent a research period at the Institute of Intellectual Property (IIP) in Tokyo.
Distinctions
Matthieu’s expertise is recognised by several international directories. IAM Patent 1000 (Bronze band, at the same rank as Dhenne Avocats) describes him as “ An experienced and strategic litigator with strong commercial awareness and an approachable style ”. He is also listed in IP STARS by Managing Intellectual Property (Patent Star, France). The Legal Summits awarded Dhenne Avocats the Silver Trophy.
Teaching
Matthieu is a lecturer at the University of Paris Panthéon-Assas, where he also teaches intellectual property litigation and intellectual property law as applied to the digital sector in the master's degree in industrial property law.
He has also taught intellectual property law at École Centrale Supelec, Sorbonne University, Paris XII University, Lille University and Montpellier University.
Publications
Matthieu is the author or co-author of several works in patent law, including a Treatise on Patent Law published by LexisNexis in 2024. He has also contributed to works specifically addressing patent law in the fields of computer science and biotechnology published between 2016 and 2019: "Technique et droit des brevets," "Computer-Implemented Inventions: Issues, Practices, and Perspectives," and "The Law of Reverse Engineering." These publications reflect his deep expertise and contributions to the field of patent law.
He is also the author of over a hundred articles primarily related to patent law, the majority of which have been published in peer-reviewed journals (such as Dalloz, LexisNexis, Lamy). Additionally, he has authored LexisNexis encyclopedia entries on FRAND licenses and technical aspects. Furthermore, he serves as the French contributor to the Kluwer Patent Blog International, where he regularly publishes articles.
