An exclusive license is a license agreement whereby the holder of an intellectual property right (for example, a patent right, a trademark right or a copyright right) grants a licensee exclusive use of his invention or work, in a defined territory and for a defined period. In this context, the holder undertakes not to grant other licenses for the same purpose and, in principle, to no longer exploit it himself (unless otherwise stipulated). The main advantage for the licensee is the certainty of being the sole holder of the exploitation rights. In return, he generally pays a fee (royalty) and may be required to comply with certain obligations (maintaining the title in force, quality standards, etc.).
